The holidays are arriving early this year for an estimated 10,000 New York families, as they receive free food, footwear, personal care items and toys in a relief effort called the "Miracle on Merrick Boulevard" in Jamaica, Queens. The event is expected to be one of the largest single-day relief efforts in our nation's history, benefiting more than 40,000 people.
Families will gather throughout the day to collect packages of food and supplies. All program beneficiaries have been chosen in advance based on need. In total, more than 30 semi-tractor trailer trucks will deliver food, footwear, personal care items, household items, gifts and toys. Each family receives enough food to supplement meals for a family of four for a week.
"Food and footwear are basic necessities," said Wayne Elsey, Founder and CEO of Soles4Souls. "We hope that this donation, in addition to our previous donations to Feed The Children, will provide the much needed relief and joy these children and families need, especially during the holiday season."
Soles4Souls is providing about $1 million in shoes (retail value) for this single event, and has provided a total of $5 million in footwear to Feed The Children since Thanksgiving.
In its short history, Soles4Souls has sent more than 3 million pairs of shoes to people in 40 countries around the world through donations from footwear companies, retailers, churches, nonprofit ministries, civic groups, schools, and individuals. |
